2016 Jeep Cherokee Oil Type

Before changing oil in your 2016 Jeep Cherokee check owner’s manual for required oil type and viscosity and find out the manufacturer’s recommendations.

VISCOSITY GRADE

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee uses two different viscosities of full synthetic oil. The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine runs on SAE 0W-20 motor oil, with a new filter for maximum efficiency in any conditions; while the 3.2 V6 prefers using only high quality SAE or API certified oils of 5W-20 viscosity that are made to last longer under varying temperatures.

The 0W or 5W refers to the pumpability in cold temperatures. Therefore, a 0W would flow more easily than a 5W and could be an acceptable substitute. Thus, it is suitable to use a SAE 0W-20 as a replacement for SAE 5W-20 application.

CAPACITY

Use 5.5 quarts of oil for 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and 6 qt for the 3.2L engine. Both engines preferred oil type is an SAE 5W-20 synthetic blend.

SPECIFICATION OF OIL

Yet, Pennzoil is the only motor oil recommended by the Jeep brand in North America. But you can always use an equivalent motor oil for your 2016 Jeep Cherokee as long as it has the proper weight.

How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step

If you own a Jeep Cherokee, then you know that it is one of the best vehicles on the road today. This durable SUV has been around for decades and continues to grow in popularity among drivers looking for an affordable vehicle with some serious off-road capability. If your 2016 Jeep Cherokee is due for its oil change, this post will show you how to complete the task yourself.

The best part about changing your own oil? You can do it anywhere there’s space! Whether at home or out in the middle of nowhere, all you need are simple hand tools to get started. We have created a step by step guide below so that even novice mechanics can learn how to perform an oil change themselves.

Step 1.

We’re going to change the oil and the 2015 Jeep Cherokee.

Things you may need: grocery store bags, a funnel, an oil drain pan, a wrench with a 13 millimeter on it a coin (you will need some sort of coin for removing the plastic). Also get a plastic sort of facade type of piece on the bottom, some rags, an oil synthetic and the filter.

From front of the car, first thing we’re going to do is take this plastic piece off.

So if you look under, it’s a plastic piece that says oil drain. And here’s the little area where you put your coin.

And then there’s two little tabs here on the front, you just pull it back, then you can pull it out of there and then it’s out of the way.

Step 2.

Now that that’s off, you should be able to see up in there you can see the oil drain plug. So we’re gonna take that off of there now with a 13 millimeter wrench okay, just loosened it with the wrench.

Get an oil pan ready under the plug. Let it all drain out.

Step 3.

So what you need is to do with this one, before you get to the oil filter, so finish up this part because the oil filter is right there so it’s really close.

Put this plug back in.

So take the oil filter plastic piece off, you can see how easy this is right inside there. They’re amazing. So we’re just going to pull that off of there and then put the new one on. Put an old filter into the drainer.

Step 4.

And then here’s the new filter. You just get some oil out of here. Put oil on the seal for oil in the threads. Put it back on there, just get it tight by hand. Not super tight, just real snug on there. Put it back on. And then and tighten it with the coin.

Step 5.

So now the system’s all closed up, ready to put the new oil in.

We put the cap back on. And I use the funnel to put the old oil into the jug which is now empty. Then take the used oil to Autozone to recycle.

Step 6.

The last very last thing to do is to go into the car and reset the oil life meter in the computer, which it tells you how to do in your user manual.

So that’s how you change the oil.
