How to Change Oil By Yourself – Step by Step
Many people prefer to change their own oil rather than pay a mechanic because it is simple and inexpensive. On average, this process takes about two hours and requires minimal tools and equipment. Here’s what you need for the job:
- oil pan or container with a capacity of at least five quarts for every liter engine displacement
- 3/8″ drive ratchet
- six-inch extension for the 3/8″ ratchet
- 14-millimeter socket
- a torque wrench
- oil filter
- motor oil for your car
- rags or towels
- a clean funnel
- a drain pan
Let’s get started.
STEP 1: PREP
Put the car up. Next up, we’re pop the hood and remove the oil cap. Put it somewhere so that you won’t forget it.
STEP 2: REMOVE THE COVER
Locate the drain plug of the oil pan located at the front left bottom side of the engine block.
Put a drain pan underneath this place as some oil will come out once first started draining. It’s time to take off the drain plug by hand but keep turning until all of its threads are cleared from the hole then can be removed with wrench/ratchet completely.
STEP 3: DRAINING THE OIL
Once done let more oil flow into the drain pan below until no-drip comes out anymore.
STEP 4: REPLACE THE OIL FILTER
Put on gloves and eye protection then gently tip undercarriage from side to side so the oil can drain further. Then wipe away any remaining gunk/dirt on the bottom of the engine block and reinstall the oil filter box or under the engine cover.
STEP 5:PUT BACK THE DRAIN PLUG
Then replace drain bolt with. Put a new gasket onto the drain plug before putting it back in place with a wrench.
STEP 6: ADD THE NEW OIL
Fill up your car’s engine with four Liters or quarts until no visible oil comes out when unscrewing the dipstick. To start filling up just attach the hose end into the filler hole located next to the windshield washer fluid tank lid using an automatic funnel if possible otherwise use a small one. Don’t forget to put the cap back on once done.
Check the oil level and the job is done.
