How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step

Changing your own oil is a rewarding experience, and doing it on your own car will save you some money. The process can be tricky so we’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help you through the whole thing! Let’s get started!

Step 1.

Before we drain the oil remove the oil cap. Once you raise it up, it’s a good idea to put a jack stand for safety there. Now we’re going to turn the wheel all the way to the right. So we can have access to the plastic cover where the oil filter is.

Now we’re going to remove the plastic clips that cover an access to the filter. Once you remove the cover, you should have access to the filter.

Step 2.

Start removing the filter using an oil filter tool.

Once you get it loose, you should be able to pick it up by hand so we’re gonna have an oil drain when you remove the oil filter, it’s a good idea to check for any metal debris. If it looks nice and clean, it means the motor is nice and healthy.

Step 3.

Once you’re ready to install the new filter, it’s a good idea to apply oil on the seal. That way when you remove it next time it’s not stuck in the oil filters. It can be impossible to remove than. Okay, now we’re gonna install the new oil filter.

To install an oil filter, you should hand tighten it. You don’t have to use the tool to tighten it all the way. So hang tight should be enough.

Step 4.

Now we’re going to remove the drain plug to drain the oil. It’s located behind the oil pan and you grab your tool and remove the drain plug (it should be a 14 millimeter).

Be careful if it’s hot. Wait till it cools down. So now we’re going to wait for all the oil to drain.

Once the oil is drain, we’re going to put the drain plug back on.

Then we’re gonna clean it, you need to put the plastic cover back on and now let’s add the oil.

Step 5.

Now it’s better to build the car at ground level.

Use the funnel and add approximately five quarts of oil. We’re going to put the oil cap on. The last step is going to be the oil life reset.

Step 6.

Once you’re done changing the oil and checking the oil level, we’re going to reset the oil life. So we’re going to click on the start button twice without stepping on the brake pedal. Then we’re going to click the square and go all the way to Settings.

Then you’re going to scroll down to maintenance and click on maintenance. Then click on service. Then we’re going to set the mileage for the next service. Then you click on the Reset button and it should reset the only life.
