How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step

Whether it’s your first time or you’ve done this a few times, changing the oil in your truck can be intimidating. However, with our step-by-step guide and some basic tools, you’ll have no problem getting the job done. This particular guide is for 2014 RAM 1500s but will work on other years as well.

Step 1.

The tools required for this job are a three eighths ratchet 13 millimeter socket, funnel, oil filter wrench in case the oil filters tight and torque wrench. The oil I’ll be using is Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic 5w-20, and a filter.

Once you’ve driven the truck around for a bit and got the oil nice and hot, you can remove the oil filler cap just so the oil drains easy.

Step 2.

Once you’re in the truck if you look just behind the crossmember here you’ll find the oil drain bolt and is usually 13 millimeter socket and ratchet to remove this.

Now with most of the oil drained out you can replace the drain plug and snug it down with your 30 millimeter socket.

Step 3.

Now you can remove the oil filter it’s located on the passenger side of the engine.

Before installing the filter you want to remove the seal. And then we install the new filter.

Step 4.

You can now refill the engine with the new oil. So now with the new wheel added we can start the engine for a few seconds and then check the level.

Step 5.

So after the engine has been running for a minute or two, you can check the level.

It’s always a good idea to check a level over the next few days to make sure it’s still correct.
