How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step

One of the most important maintenance tasks you can perform on your Subaru is changing the oil. This guide will show you how to change the oil on a 2015 Subaru Legacy by yourself – step-by-step.

Step 1.

Here are the things we’re gonna need today, we’re gonna need five quarts of oil, socket, wrench with a 17 millimeter socket, you’re gonna need your oil filter, a drain pan, a funnel and some towels.

Now what we do, we let the car run for about a minute or two that that engine oil get nice and warm.

Then turn it off. Let it sit for about two minutes.

Remove the oil filler cap.

Step 2.

Next step will be to remove your 17 millimeter drain plug. Sure get your drain pan ready.

Crack it with the wrench and then move my hand. Go ahead and let that drain.

Inspect your drain plug and make sure you place this washer. If you’re replacing the washer, just make sure that the flat side of the washer is sitting flush against the drain plug.

Once it comes to a slow drip, go and put your old pen to the side. Wipe down the surface and reinstall your drain plug. Then you tighten it with your socket. That should be good enough, not too loose, not too tight.

Step 3.

Our next step is to remove the oil filter. Sometimes when people do oil changes, they tie these all filters too tight. And if they’re too tight, then you would have to use a certain tool to go ahead and remove them. Use your wrench to remove it. Snug, not too tight so I could just go ahead and remove it with my hand. Make sure that the gasket is on there and you don’t leave it right here on your main surface.
