How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step
Learn how to change the oil in your car with this step-by-step guide from Subaru Outback owners. Read on for tips and tricks to make the process simpler, faster, and more efficient.
Step 1.
Now you’re gonna need some tools to do this job. Got an oil drain pan, you’ll need a 17 millimeter socket and extension, a ratchet.
You may need a torque wrench (an oil filter wrench), new oil filter, oil.
Jack up the car. And to put it on Jack’s hands we use frame rail. We’ve already got the oil pan under the car and we’ve got the 17 millimeter socket and a ratchet. Find this plastic skid plate and the plug is seen through this hole.
Step 2.
So you’ve got your socket on there and go ahead and break it loose.
Now that it’s loose, We’re gonna put the drain pan under it.
We checked the the drain plug to make sure that the crush washer is on it. Let this drain and then we’re going to swap that out with a fresh crush washer and to wipe off my hands.
When you’ve got the drain plug in, cleaned it off, and got the new crush washer installed, you can clean everything around the plug hole. You know, any dirt or anything up there, any debris because you want to seal up right.
Then we’re gonna go ahead and fingers start the plug, you want to just want to finger start it make sure you don’t cross thread. Alright, so it’s in finger tight.
Now we’ve got the torque wrench here. That way it actually torques correctly if you hold it up on the neck of the wrench.
Now we’re just gonna clean off this residual oil and then lower the car down.
Step 3.
We’ve got the new filter here, and you just take your finger and dipped it in the new oil, so the ring doesn’t get stuck in on this filter. And we’re gonna go ahead and take the old filter off and put the new one on.
So when you take these off, you always want to make sure that the O ring stayed on the old filter and it’s not up on the ceiling surface in there. If you accidentally leave it on there, it can cause a huge oil leak and possibly blow your engine. So you definitely don’t want to do that.
If you see the dirt in here, you want to clean that up because you don’t want any of that getting inside.
Step 4.
As you can see the oil fill cap is conveniently located right next to that oil filter. We’re gonna go ahead and take that off and we’ve got a nice clean funnel here. And we’re gonna the spec on this is 5.1 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic oil. So We’re going to start with five quarts and check the level on it.
Don’t forget to put your cap back on, it can cause quite a mess.
Step 5.
We’re gonna go ahead and start the car up, run it for 30 seconds in that should give the oil pressure time to build up and that’ll fill in the oil filter and fill up the oil galleys and lube the lifters and all that.
And then we’re going to shut off and check the oil. So, we’ve ran it for 30 seconds and the dipstick is right on the opposite side of the engine. After we checked the oil level and everything’s fine, we check if there are any leaks. Once it’s fine, the oil change process is over.
