How to Change Oil by Yourself – Step by Step
The 2014 Chevy Silverado is a great truck, and if you own one, then you know how much it means to take care of your vehicle. Now it’s time to start thinking about maintenance. As with any car or truck, there are some things you can do yourself without having to go to an expensive mechanic. One such thing is changing your oil by following our step-by-step guide below!
Step 1.
We’re going to put a drain bucket underneath the vehicle. The oil pan is located under the drain plug. So, we’re going to take a 15 millimeter wrench, loosen up this drain plug and pull it up drain oil.
You want to look at the back of the drain plug. This is a rubber seal on the stream plug.
It may look like it’s a little bit crushed. It would be a good idea to replace that seal or this drain in this case. Right now, that the oil is drained out into the drain plug. Store that and take the wrench, tighten it up.
Step 2.
Grab the filter. Try to grab the filter first and see if you can loosen it up. If you need to take a strap wrench or on the filter, loosen it. Once you get it loose, then you can take it off the oil drain rag, take this filter off.
Step 3.
We’re gonna drain the filter. We want to check on the engine side. See if the seal is stuck to the engine. A lot of times the oil filter seal will come off the oil filter. So double check the oil filter itself and make sure the still seal is still there. Take a rag and just wipe this off.
Take a little bit of the new oil and lubricate the seal.
Wipe it on the seal, that’s gonna make it seal better and then when you go to remove it next time, it’ll come off a lot easier.
Once it’s snug, you can do like another quarter turn.
Clean this up a little bit. Take a rag wipe it off.
Step 4.
Now we’re going to pull the oil cap off oil cap. You can check your owner’s manual to make sure it’s the appropriate oil.
Take a funnel, install the funnel. The 1500 truck takes eight quarts of oil if you have a bigger Silverado like a 2500 or 3500, than make sure you check the oil viscosity is going to be different and the amount is going to be different.
Step 5.
Take the funnel out. Take the cap, put the cap back on. We’re going to start the vehicle for about 30 seconds and then the your dipstick is. Let’s pull that out. We’re going to wipe it off right off the bat.
Make sure the vehicle is level and after you start it just let it sit for about a minute or two.
Let the oil drain back down to the pan. Pull it up.
Check the level. We want the level in between these two hash marks. We insert the dipstick. We’re going to take the key turning to the on position without starting the engine.
Let everything stabilize. Then right here on the actual cluster. So, we’re going to scroll through. There’s the speed is a trip fuel range economy tire pressure, oil life.
